Real Time Continuous Glucose Monitoring
Real Time Glucose Monitoring is a state-of-the-art diagnostic tool used by physicians to track continuous blood glucose patterns in persons with diabetes mellitus.
The system provides up to 288 glucose readings over a 24 hour period, allowing patient and doctor to track glucose excursions during the day. This is far superior to standard finger-prick capillary glucose testing, which gives an incomplete picture of glucose behaviour during the day and night.
The newer devices such as the Guardian RT system use wireless technology and allow patients to spot check their glucose levels by simply looking at the recording device. In cases where excellent glucose control is desired (eg diabetes in pregnancy) this device may be used.
It has been shown that real time glucose monitoring improves diabetes control. Users of real time monitoring spend 21% less time in hypoglycemia and 23% less time in hyperglycemia. If you are interested in the details of this study, download the document here (686KB PDF).
